The twisting way that the calypso trappings of the sound make their way across on opening track ‘Poa Kichizi Kama Ndizi’ carefully construct the rhythm. What they add to the delivery is considerable and the composure is what gives the track a steady sense of identity. It is anthemic with the Caribbean orchestration adding a refreshing sense of exhilaration to the overall end product. But the neatness of the trappings allow it all to unfurl in a truly captivating way that is excellent from start to finish. Again ‘Hot Season’ plays out in a similar vein, but there is a candid sense of absolution to be found in the handling. The dream pop sensibilities are impressive and the way they add to the dynamic is a good call. The seasoned gravitas of the shapely tempo shows as the maturity of the progression brings everything full circle. It is interesting and what is also picked up on is their attempt to broaden the scope of their sound while containing it within the style they are comfortable with.
With’You’ they again knead the softer calling of their sound but allow it to usher in a hardened feel in the undertone. There is a sense of brevity in the vocals here which offer a large amount of appeal. Albeit sedate in some places there is a conclusive sentiment that collects on this one. As a result the lush flow of the guitar riffs plying away seem to present a sense of the cinematic in the rhythm which is favourably versed by the vocals and the harder pick up when the rhythm gains ground. But it is all tallied up neatly which shows here. In some ways a latent Beach Boys circa ‘Pet Sounds’ era is also present on ‘We Can’. Yet that influence meets with a seamless lo-fi characteristic which cuts across on this in a way that adds a heightened modernity which is impressive. The welcoming way it expands on the appreciation of how the EP comes to sound overall doesn’t go amiss either. This is something that is equally cool as much as it deeply expressive. The referential way everything plays out is brilliant. The final track is ‘Post Youth’ which develops the sound furthermore by giving it a post wave attribute. The deadening intro catches something in the drum loop that is captivating. While the lonesome situating of the vocals alongside the guitar works in a way that is on a par with Band Of Horses and other bands of such high calibre. This is a very slick tune and the sunken calypso touches heighten the appreciation as much as they give it a further sense of worth to savour.
